Trade visitors impressed by the trade fair duo of GELATISSIMO and INTERGASTRA | IKA/Culinary Olympics ensured greater internationality
After a four-year break, the time was long overdue for a new edition of GELATISSIMO in conjunction with INTERGASTRA, the leading trade fair for the hotel and gastronomy business. The focal points from 3 to 7 February 2024 were current trends, innovations and visionary concepts for the hotel, restaurant and catering industry. The successful trade fair duo was again complemented by the IKA/Culinary Olympics, the world's oldest international cooking competition. 88,000 visitors from 98 countries came to Stuttgart for this purpose.
Innovations, trends and concentrated know-how for gelatieri
The gelato trade fair GELATISSIMO, which was staged as usual concurrently with INTERGASTRA, made an impression with a varied product exhibition containing everything that is needed for the production and sale of gelato, as well as for fitting out cafés and ice-cream parlours. The programme was rounded off by interesting live workshops with the best gelatieri and master ice-cream makers in Europe, as well as exciting competitions such as the Grand Prix GELATISSIMO and Intercoppa. The gelato competitions are traditionally organised in cooperation with Levati Editori. This year Angelika Szaban won the Coppa GELATISSIMO while Cornelia Chila came out on top in the Intercoppa competition.
The entries this year in the competition for the Robert Widman Cup were also impressive. In this competition the best confectioners had to demonstrate their talent when producing a show cake with the motto "Casino". The Baden-Württemberg Regional Association of Confectioners' Guilds honoured the achievements with gold, silver and bronze medals.
Klaus Vollmer, Master of the Baden-Württemberg Regional Association of Confectioners' Guilds, drew positive conclusions regarding the trade fair duo of GELATISSIMO and INTERGASTRA: "The trade fair was again a total success both for us and the extremely interested visitors. The joint exhibition hall for the key topics of confectionery and coffee, which was directly adjacent to GELATISSIMO, is both a proven and a successful combination," said Vollmer. According to Vollmer, the inclusion of the vending section was a valuable addition since both confectionery colleagues and the other areas of the hospitality industry were able to generate lucrative additional business with the aid of vending machines.
The Stuttgart Coffee Summit, for example, was exactly the right place for everyone wanting to obtain information about the new products, services and business opportunities relating to coffee. The Wilhelma Zoological and Botanical Gardens in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and the Coffee Consulate from Mannheim presented a unique exhibition concept, i.e. the experience coffee plantation. This special show represented an opportunity to experience and taste the biological diversity and complexity of coffee in a realistic environment. Various coffee roasters also showcased their coffee specialities while the exhibitors presented a wide range of products extending from water treatment aids and options for modern café equipment through to reusable crockery.
Another highlight of the Stuttgart trade fair was the impressive special show entitled "OUTDOOR. AMBIENTE. LIVING" in the trade fair center park where the exhibitors presented innovative sun shading and weather protection solutions for outdoor gastronomy under real conditions.
In the different themed halls at INTERGASTRA more than 1,300 exhibitors, including well-known companies and young start-ups, presented their products and solutions for the current challenges in the hotel and restaurant business. INTERGASTRA was divided into the following topic areas: "Furnishing & Tableware", "Digital Solutions, Services & IT", "Beverages", "Outdoor Gastronomy", "Coffee, Confectionery & Vending", "Kitchen Systems", "Food", and "Associations & Organisations". INTERGASTRA established new key areas this year with FOKUS VENDING, which was designed and implemented with the support of the Federal Association of the German Vending Machine Industry (BDV), and the hall for digital solutions. In addition to the companies' exhibits, the trade fair featured an extensive accompanying programme with panel discussions, talks, seminars, workshops and various competitions.
Presentation of Olympic gold
The IKA/Culinary Olympics celebrated its 26th edition for the second time in Stuttgart concurrently with INTERGASTRA. The German Chefs' Association (VKD), the organiser of the largest and oldest international exhibition for culinary skills, also wants to continue this cooperation. "Four days, more than 1,200 participants from 55 countries and over 7,000 menus: the IKA/Culinary Olympics are a fantastic cooking competition, and this event with its long tradition was a great success," said VKD President Daniel Schade. "The atmosphere was exciting and special right from the start. We received very positive feedback from the chefs, fans and guests. We are proud of that." He congratulated the winners of the Culinary Olympics. "Every participant attained fantastic achievements and showed what real culinary skills look like," said Schade. "We would like to thank all the chefs for coming to Stuttgart and are already looking forward to coming back in 2028 to the 27th IKA/Culinary Olympics which will again be staged in Stuttgart concurrently with INTERGASTRA." Until then, the team from Finland can carry the title of Olympic Champion in the National Teams Category. The team from Sweden defended its title in the Junior National Teams Category while two gold medals were presented in the Community Catering Category to the "Compass Group Culinary Team" from Finland and the "Swiss Armed Forces Culinary Team / SACT" from Switzerland. The gold medal for "cold culinary skills" in the Culinary Art & Pastry Art Category was presented to the regional team "PaisWorld Culinary Team Korea" from South Korea. The German teams ended in 9th place in the National Teams Category and 5th place in the Junior National Teams Category.
"We not only maintained the position as the leading trade fair for the hotel and gastronomy business, we also strengthened it. There is much greater interest both at a national and an international level," said Stefan Lohnert, President of Messe Stuttgart. Since INTERGASTRA, GELATISSIMO and the IKA/Culinary Olympics were staged concurrently, all trade visitors had an outstanding opportunity to obtain extensive insights into international trends in the industry over a period of five days. "We certainly fulfilled our objective to raise the two large events to the next level in cooperation with the German Chefs' Association as the organiser of the IKA/Culinary Olympics and the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) as the promotional supporter of the trade fair," said Stefan Lohnert.
Positive response to INTERGASTRA 2024
The Baden-Württemberg branch of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) has been supporting INTERGASTRA for more than 50 years. "The success of INTERGASTRA is an encouraging signal for the hotel and restaurant industry in Germany. The trade fair showed that the industry is looking to the future despite the difficult economic situation: thanks to the large number of excellent exhibitors, entrepreneurs were able to discover numerous innovative solutions which will help companies to work more successfully. However, INTERGASTRA also included ideas and concepts for adapting hotel and restaurant services to current trends and market developments. The visitors to the trade fair made intensive use of this specialist input and the opportunity for discussions among industry professionals," said Fritz Engelhardt, Chairman of the Baden-Württemberg branch of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA).
Highly satisfied exhibitors:
Andreas Kienzle, Area Sales Manager Gelato, Dreidoppel GmbH: "We had a very good response from first-class trade visitors. Since we meet precisely our customers here, we were able to ideally use GELATISSIMO both as a sales platform and a place to agree follow-up appointments. We found out once again that gelato is crisis-proof. On the whole, we are very satisfied and would like to come back the next time."
Felix Haegermann, Business Development Manager for system catering, Frischli Milchwerke GmbH: "At GELATISSIMO we presented, for example, our Carolina ice-cream bases – and therefore literally had a field day: we held positive discussions, also with a large number of potential customers. We discovered that there is increasing demand for products which pre-empt the first manufacturing processes, thereby solving the problem caused by a shortage of staff and energy costs. We are satisfied with our participation in the trade fair."
Johannes Roiner, Management, G. Fabbri Deutschland GmbH: "We met first-rate visitors at GELATISSIMO. We reached all our customers, including those from outside Baden-Württemberg, and forged many new contacts. Our set topics – for example mango as the gelato of the year – were a complete success. We also saw high demand for vegan products. We are very satisfied with the outcome of the trade fair!"
Dr. Aris Kaschefi, Managing Director, Federal Association of the German Vending Machine Industry (BDV): "INTERGASTRA was very well-attended and showed that the vending industry can develop new markets and is becoming a new focal point. In particular, contacts with restaurateurs and hotel operators are opening up exciting opportunities for the vending industry. We are enthusiastic about the opportunities arising from the new markets and are looking forward to exploring and extending these new opportunities."
The next edition of GELATISSIMO will be held concurrently with INTERGASTRA from 7 to 11 February 2026.
